maremma

The Maremma is a territory perfect for those who love nature and ancient history.

In this part of Southern Tuscany, these two passions are often joined, creating places unlike any where else in the world, places that are just waiting to be discovered and visited.

The first of these is the Monte Argentario, a splendid, rocky coastline that overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea.

A particularly popular tourist destination, it is home to the two towns of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole.

Amiata Mountain is only forty minutes by car.

An ancient volcanic mountain, it is another of the Maremma’s hidden beauties and is surrounded by the incredible Amiata Mountain Animal Park, as well as the towns of Castel del Piano, Grosseto, Semproniano, Santa Fiora and Seggiano.

Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano are all towns that rise in the heart of Area del Tufo, an ancient land once inhabited by the Etruscans and Romans.

Paradise for those who want to know more about these ancient civilisations, these towns are the custodians of many ruins including the Vie Cave roads, various necropolises and the remains of ancient cities.

Pitigliano is also home to the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, while Sovana is better known as the birthplace of Pope Gregory VII, or Suan Idebrando Sorano and as the location of the Orsini Fortress, the Renaissance residence of the Orsini Counts.

Capalbio, a wonderful medieval town, is situated between the Maremman hills.

A few minutes from the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, it is famous for its wine, Capalbio DOC, for its monuments, including the Collegiate Church of St. Nicholas and the city walls and for its Tarot Garden, a masterpiece by artist Niki de Saint Phalle.

And finally there is Scansano, a charming town of medieval origins that is also quite famous for its wine, the Morellino di Scansano DOCG.
